| The Pacific Coast Club was built in 1926 and included a hotel for the club members. For many years the Pacific Coast Club was the center of social and business activities in Long Beach, California. The building was highlighted by it's bright blue tile roof and carved building borders. Inside the club had beautiful curved ceilings adorned with carvings of mythological characters and other decorations. The many beautiful treatments of the interior, including the fire places, combined with it's unique exterior architecture made the building a work of art on the inside as well as the outside. When the building was torn down in the 1980's it led to the formation of a Heritage Society in Long Beach, that cut across all economic and cultural borders to preserve more of the history of this area. The view in this drawing is from the early years during the Pacific Coast Club's "heyday". As a student at Long Beach Woodrow Wilson High School in the 1950's, I swam at the club pool and was fascinated with the interior of the building. William R. Johnston Artist |
