"Old Mary" Steam Engine
Sugar Pine Railroad, Central California

This 0-4-0 locomotive is the first steam engine to be used in the lumbering industry in central California during the 1800's. These trains traveled at very low speeds. The trestle is an example of a modular system to allow them to be erected and moved to new locations in a very short time. Tracks can be quickly constructed in any kind of terrain where the trees were being harvested. The x-bracing is not on the outside as is normal. but placed in the center of the structure. The vertical bents are individual sections that are held together with keeper boards. The engine was nick-named "Old Mary". There is on display a similar locomotive labeled Old Mary at Knotts Berry Farm, in California.
