Fisherman's Wharf - Circa 1882
San Francisco, California Fisherman's Wharf

Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco
It was in these Lateen Sail Fishing Boats, owned by the early Italian citizens of San Francisco, that the foundation for the fishing industry of the San Francisco Bay area was established. In these small boats, rigged with Mediterranean type sails, they fished the calm waters of the bay. Many ventured out into the waves and currents of the ocean while others roamed the California coast line.

As this fishing boat enters Fisherman's Wharf harbor, we can see in the background, Alcatraz Island with the remains of the military prison that the Mexican authorities built while San Francisco was under their rule. The island had been used as a prison before the Federal Detention facility was constructed by the United States.

Today Fisherman's Wharf is one of the most popular tourist attractions in California, with fishing and seafood still presented as their most important image.
