| End of an Era |
| As an artist, I am always seeking out symbolic representations that function to visually identify and represent historical locations and ideas. One of the most colorful and interesting periods of American History is the Victorian Age, existing from the end of the Civil War to the beginnings of the Industrial Revolution that led us into the 1920's. There is no clear-cut timeline between one period and the next as changes always overlap themselves. The Fire Horse racing down the street, drawing live steam boilers and early chemical wagons, was the last image of a Victorian America. The Kissel Chemical Engine was one of the earliest mechanical pieces of modern fire equipment used around the country. From 1915 to as late as 1918 more teams of Fire Horses were retired and replaced by this mechanical beast, with special city ceremonies, then by any other manufactured Fire Engine. It was the basis of the modern fire fighting departments we have to day. An era had indeed come to an end. William R. Johnston Artist |
