Chinese Elm
This tree, the largest Chinese Elm in the United States was over 150 years old when I sketched it. At one time Central Park had, as part of the park department, their own horticultural and insect laboratories to maintain the trees and plants in the park. This was the last tree cared for by the park program and you can see the repair that was done to the trunk. Under the administration of Mayor Wagner such repair work was farmed out to private enterprises. The tree was sketched during the time the new bright green spring leaves were exploding into bloom. This view is from the south side of 72nd and 5th Ave.
